Environmental and Chemical Laboratory

IRTC houses an Environmental and Chemistry laboratory, which is certified B- class for water quality and soil testing by Kerala State Pollution Control Board. The rain gauge and weather station attached to IRTC are also managed by the laboratory. Quality analysis of Compost, Oil and Soap are also undertaken on demand. The laboratories are equipped with facilities for isolation and purification of microbes, fixed and suspended culturing, Flame photometer, Spectrophotometer, Muffle furnace etc.

Instruments Available in Lab

1. Hot air oven or dry heat sterilization

Sterilizing by dry heat is accomplished by conduction.The heat is absorbed by the outside surface of the item, then passes towards the centre of the item, layer by layer. 

Dry heat does most of the damage by oxidizing molecules.  The essential cell constituents are destroyed and the organism dies. The temperature is maintained for almost an hour to kill the most difficult of the resistant spores.

The most common time-temperature relationships for sterilization with hot air sterilizers are;

170°C (340°F) for 30 minutes,

160°C (320°F) for 60 minutes, and

150°C (300°F) for 150 minutes or longer depending up the volume.

2. Atomic absorption spectro photo meter

Principle :The technique  uses basically the principle that free atoms (gas) generated in an atomizer can absorb radiation at specific frequency. Atomic absorption spectroscopy quantifies the absorption of ground state atoms in the gaseous state.

3. Autoclave

Water when heated in a closed container, saturated steam is produced under pressure. According to Boyle's law, when volume of the steam is kept contstant, the temperature is directly proportional to pressure. If the pressure is reduced it boils at a lower temperature. If the pressure is increased, it boils anhigher pressure. At 15lbs , temperature of 121°c is obtained. Moist heat coagulates the proteins of the microorganism and kills all the living entity including spores in 15-20 minutes. Hot saturated steam is efficient for killing microorganisms, since it penetrates rapidly and gives up its latent heat as it condenses on the cooler objects

A retired professor, Scientific expert and former President of KSSP, Dr. Raveendran is an eminent scholar with a number of books and published articles to his credit. He is also a former director of IRTC. During an illustrious career, he has held the portfolios of a Lecturer, Scientific Officer, Expert in Planning Board, Deputy Director of Collegiate Education and Senate Member of M.G University
