Meenvallom Small Hydro Project: Top

The DPR prepared by IRTC for the Mennvallom Small Hydel Project has been accepted by Palakkad Dist. Panchayath for implementation through a public limited company called Palakkad Small Hydro Company with the technical support of IRTC. The construction works of the project will be done by SILK on turnkey basis.

The capacity of the proposed hydel plant is 3 MW and 8.4 MU of energy will be produced annually.  The submergence area comes to 0.3 ha. of forest land, which is very small area. The power produced will be fed to the KSEB grid. The rate of power purchase has been fixed but the agreement (PPA) is yet to sign. The total estimate for the project is about Rupees 10 crore. The funding is 30% equity and the remaining as loan. The refusal on the part of the state government to stand as surety is posing problems in securing the loan. The matter at present is under consideration of state Govt. Forest clearance has been obtained but the forestland earmarked for the project is yet to be handed over to the company for want of finalisation for cutting and removal of trees.

Solid waste management project of Palakkad Municipality

IRTC is providing technical support to the Palakkad Municipality for installing a solid waste treatment plant. The technology involved is aerobic windrow composting, a methodology successfully tried out by IRTC on a small scale in Chalakkudy. A DPR has been prepared and submitted to Palakkad Municipality, which has been approved by the high power co-ordination committee for Rastriya Sam Vikas Yojana (RSVY) that funds the programme

Technical support to Kanjikkuzhi and Aryad blocks, Mararikulam for developing Local Entrepreneurship:

The Kanjikkuzhi and Aryad Block Panchayaths have jointly taken up a programme for micro-entrepreneurship development programme with support from Govt. of India and approached IRTC for technical support. IRTC is to provide technology for the production of hand made soap and toiletries, mushroom cultivation, vermi composting and technical support for creation of infrastructural facilities for the same. IRTC has conducted a number of training programmes in the above areas to the selected participants. A chemical laboratory and mushroom spawn production centre has been established for supporting the activities. IRTC is also taking a role in motivating the local people, especially women to take up activities like soap production or mushroom cultivation as an income generating activity.

Value Addition of Terra-cotta Materials by Modernization of Techniques and Introduction of Innovative Products:
The project aims to reduce the drudgery of the women pottery workers by providing pug mill as a community facility to be used by women who are at present engaged in the preparation of raw material using traditional manual processing and to introduce transparent and coloured glazed products which will add value and attraction to the wares and train the women workers in these tasks.
A pug mill is already installed in the IRTC campus and pugged clay is being distributed to the potters as door delivery at a nominal charge. Training is being given to the members of the potter colonies in studio pottery and motorised wheel. A programmable muffle furnace is already installed. Along with this a number of activities for the social upliftment is also being carried out.

Estimation and mapping of Fluoride concentration in Three Panchayaths of Chittur, Palakkad:

Various studies have shown that the drinking water sources of many panchayaths of Chittur like Muthalamada, Kollengode, Kozhinjampara, Pattanchery, Vadakarapathy, Eruthempathy are fluoride contaminated beyond permissible limits. IRTC has taken up a project for a detailed study of the fluoride contamination in these areas. The study proposed to chemically examine the drinking water sources in three panchayaths of Chittur Taluk namely, Nalleppilly, Kozhinjampara and Pattanchery. Based on the studies, a map will be prepared indicating the concentration of fluoride contamination of water sources. This will help people to avoid using contaminated water sources for drinking purpose. The data collection and chemical analysis is in the final stage and mapping is started

Preparation of Watershed Based Master Plan for Mundur Grama Panchayath, Palakkad

Over the years, IRTC has developed and mastered a methodology for the preparation of watershed based development master plan preparation for LSGIs. IRTC had prepared watershed-based master plans with people’s participation, for eight Block panchayaths and two Grama Panchayaths, so far. The Mundur Grama Panchayath had requested IRTC to help them in preparing a watershed based development master plan with people’s participation and IRTC is providing necessary support for it. The fieldwork for data collection is completed. Reports and maps are being prepared.

Setting up of a central unit and training centre of ornamental fish farming, breeding, and management for the development of local entrepreneurship:
The ornamental fish culture is fast becoming a promising enterprise. There is good scope for taking up ornamental fish culture as a sustainable income generating occupation. It can be taken up as a household enterprise with necessary training. This can also be taken up in a large scale with more initial investment. Similarly establishing and running aqua-shop is also very attractive enterprise.
Through this project, a training centre will be set up at IRTC to impart proper training on ornamental fish culture, breeding and management in addition to aquarium plant culture and tank fabrication, to give proper training to the prospective farmers especially women entrepreneurs. After the training they can undertake ornamental fish culture individually or as a group. IRTC has already started some activities in this direction as pre-project activity. Training is being given and fish seeds are being supplied in a limited quantity.
