Geographical information system is a computerised information system for spatial and non-spatial data referenced by Geographic coordinates. GIS can be used as a database management system for spatially distributed features and the associated attributes like Spatial data capture, Management, Analysis, Display, Decision making and Research.

IRTC has been working in the area of resource based local level planning and sustainable development for the last fifteen years and has done pioneering efforts in watershed based planning and development. As a continuation of this, IRTC has developed a Decision Support System for watershed based local level development in free GIS platform. The first attempt was in Akathethara Panchayath, Palakkad, through a KSCSTE (Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment) funded project.

Gis
IRTC has recently completed a project for preparing the action plan and maps of the Kozhikkode District Perspective Plan in WebGIS Environment ( www.keralaresourcemaps.in ) . This is a unique effort, to make use of the modern IT tools like GIS and WebGIS, for a holistic development planning at Panchayath level, based on the resource data and watershed based development master plan.
